Return to Midwifery Practice

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) recommends that a registered midwife who is returning to practice after an absence of five years or more should undertake a Return to Practice programme prior to practicing as a midwife.
Participants must be on the Active Register or eligible to apply to register with the NMBI. Return to Midwifery programmes must be approved by the NMBI. Clinical placements must take place in a healthcare institution approved by NMBI.

Return to Midwifery Practice programmes are twelve weeks in duration. They are provided to enable midwives to update both their theoretical knowledge and their clinical skills. Attainment of competence in clinical practice is assessed using a Competence Assessment Tool.
