Introduction and Rationale
An Bord Altranais (2005) strongly recommends that a registered midwife who is returning to practice after an absence of five years or more should complete a Return to Midwifery Practice Course prior to engaging in midwifery practice or being employed as a midwife.

The purpose of this National Return to Midwifery Practice Course is to enable registered midwives returning to midwifery practice to update their theoretical knowledge and their clinical skills in a supportive environment so that they may become competent and confident providers of midwifery care.

The Return to Midwifery Practice Courses (Requirements of An Bord Altranais 2005) underpins this National Curriculum programme. Indicative content is guided by the scope of midwifery practice (Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework 2015) and is reflective of the current environment in which midwifery care is provided.

Course Aim
The purpose of the Return to Midwifery Practice Course is to ensure that the course participant is equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness necessary to practise as a competent and professional midwife

Part One: Theoretical Instruction: Three weeks
Part Two: Clinical Placement: Nine weeks
